Resumo
This paper takes the view that the recent revolutionary changes in information technology have significantly influenced the conventional understanding of the levels and units of analysis in especially social sciences. To begin with, the paper distinguishes the levels of analysis form the units of analysis and makes a triple categorization of both concepts. It identifies three major levels as 1) the philosophical, 2) the theoretical, and 3) the practical (or phenomenological) levels; and three units as 1) the individual/single unit, 2) the societal/group unit, 3) the universal/all-inclusive unit. The paper then discusses how these levels and units have been operationalized in various social disciplines. With an analysis of the recent changes and developments in information technology and the increasing globalization in the world, the paper concludes that the universal/all-inclusive unit provides the students of social sciences with a more explanatory and perceptive analysis.
