Resumo
This thesis has two objectives: (1) determine the elapsed time and amount of resources necessary and sufficient for data processing in mainframes, and (2) identify the constraints that impair their achievement. We believe that mainframes can be compared to machines which transform data into information and we applied concepts of industrial productivity and efficiency to obtain the best mainframe use level. Although we use concepts, rules of thumbs and classical formulas of IT, it was important to use methods of the industrial processes to structure this methodology. Data were obtained in 4 companies in the financial and government sectors with similar situations of processor consumption, efficiency and response time. Only one of them authorized the completion of the project. The following results were obtained: the average transaction time was reduced from 29 s. to 0.3 s., the use of processor was reduced from 91% to 43%.
